Mohammad Farooq of MIT Solutions slammed 14 sixes in his knock of 163 off 99 against Khan Research and Laboratory in Pakistan’s President’s Trophy.
With his fiery knock, Farooq also broke the long-standing record for the most sixes hit in a first-class innings by a Pakistani batter. The record was previously held by Majid Khan, who had slammed 13 sixes, scoring an 89-ball 147, during a tour game against Glamorgan during Pakistan’s visit to England in 1967.
Opening the batting for MIT Solutions, the 22-year-old went all guns blazing, adding 133 runs with his opening partner Hasnain Nadeem in just 21.5 overs. Nadeem contributed just 36 runs in the stand, before being dismissed by Ahmed Bashir.
Farooq slammed 11 fours and 14 maximums in his knock, while completing his hundred off 67 deliveries. Two more batters – Salman Khan and Atiq-ur-Rehman – scored respective hundreds for MIL, who finished their first innings on 661.
Notably, this was Farooq’s second consecutive hundred, having scored 117 off 111 and a run-a-ball 67 in the opening match of the President’s Trophy season against Kingsmen Academy, helping his side draw the game despite following on. The recent uptick in form comes after a run of 10 sub-par innings across formats, where he got into double digits just thrice and crossed the 50-run mark once.
Overall, ahead of the ongoing fixture against KRL, Farooq has scored 881 runs in 25 first-class innings at 36.70, with two hundreds and six fifties. He also sports a strike rate of 88.10 in the format.
Interestingly, Farooq has been unable to carry forward his six-hitting skills in the shortest format so far: In 11 T20s, he has hit nine sixes, less than one per innings, while he already has 43 from 26 first-class innings, or roughly 1.65 sixes per outing.
