Verstappen says he “did 85% of the race with a f***ed car” after finishing second | Formula 1

Max Verstappen climbed from 21st on the grid to finish second but was deeply unhappy with his car’s balance for much of it.

He slated his car’s handling after finishing the race.

“My God, doing 85% of the race with a fucked car,” he told his team on the radio. “Of course P2 is nice but not in this way.

“I’m sorry, but what a disaster to drive. Unbelievable. I’ve never experienced something like this in the wet or in the dry. It’s really, really bad.”

Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies sympathised with Verstappen’s criticism and praised his performance.

“Understood Max, all clear,” he said. “We saw you fighting with the car all the way through.

“Well done to get a P2 in these conditions and I’m sure we’ll get to the bottom of it. You got the tricky car in all possible conditions but you got the points back which are important.”

Verstappen congratulated his team on a “good effort” after both he and team mate Isack Hadjar finished on the podium. It was Verstappen’s eighth consecutive podium finish.

Several drivers were mystified by their car’s handling during today’s rain-affected race. Both Mercedes drivers reported severe handling problems immediately after they made pit stops.
