Michael Carrick’s Manchester United reign has hit a slightly bumpier patch this season, but the bigger picture remains seriously impressive.

Since taking charge in January, the 44-year-old has overseen 21 Premier League matches, winning 13, drawing four and losing four.

That’s 39 points at an average of 2.04 per game – the sort of rate that would equate to 76 points, which is comfortably top four but probably some way off a title charge. No side in the Premier League has scored more goals than the Red Devils since Carrick was parachuted in.

There is, however, a little more context to that remarkable run now. United have won just one of their four Premier League matches so far in 2026-27, with two defeats, meaning Carrick’s side haven’t quite carried last season’s momentum into the new campaign.

Still, you look at the likes of Liverpool (6th), Chelsea (9th), Aston Villa (14th), Newcastle United (15th) and Tottenham (18th) and are reminded that the picture could be a whole lot worse.

Carrick has since been handed the permanent manager’s job until at least 2028. The early evidence suggests United may finally have found some stability on the touchline, even if the opening four games of this season have been rather less convincing.

And then there’s Bournemouth. The Cherries have lost just once in their 21 games covered by this table, picking up 34 points in the process. Their 7-13-1 record means they’ve drawn a remarkable 13 times – more than any other side – and they’re sitting fourth despite winning only seven matches.
