Stewards warn drivers over cutting first corner sequences at start and restarts | Formula 1

The stewards have issued drivers a special warning over track limits at turns one and four during Sunday’s Mexican Grand Prix.

Last year multiple drivers cut the run-off area between turns one and three at the start of the race. Some then returned positions they had gained to other drivers, but disputes continued during the race over whether the correct order had been re-established. The run-off area on the outside of turn four also became a bone of contention, as it has in previous races at the track.

For this weekend’s race the stewards have clarified how they will enforce track limits at those corners to ensure drivers neither gain an advantage nor avoid being disadvantaged by going off through the corners. Drivers will be required to immediately relinquish any positions they gain by going off.

“Applicable for this event, on lap one and the first lap after any resumption, in turns one to three , and turns four to six, all cars will, by default, be considered as both attacking and defending.

“Thus, in line with existing guidelines, any car leaving the track in these areas and maintaining a position to a car or cars within close proximity behind (as determined by the stewards) may be considered as gaining a lasting advantage, unless such position is yielded by turn four [in the case of a car leaving the track in the area of turn one to three], or by turn 12 [in the case of a car leaving the track in the area of turns four to six.]”
