Andrea Kimi Antonelli has shattered the record for the youngest Formula 1 world champions of all time.
Here’s the statistical breakdown of his triumph.Record for youngest world championship win
At 20 years and 68 days old, Antonelli has won the world championship at an astonishingly young age. He has lowered the record previously held by Sebastian Vettel by more than three years.
Before Vettel took the record, two drivers currently on the grid held it: Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. The latter claimed the record in September 2005: almost a full year before Antonelli was born.

Starts before first world championship
Despite being one of the youngest drivers ever to win the title, Antonelli is not among the 10 drivers to have made the fewest starts before winning the crown.
This is, of course, partly because today’s seasons are so long. The 2026 championship was supposed to consist of 24 rounds; the inaugural championship had just seven (champion Giuseppe Farina did not compete in the Indianapolis 500).

Antonelli is the sixth driver to win the world championship in the same year he scored his first grand prix victory. The other five drivers to do this include Farina, who inevitably achieved it by winning the first ever championship title. This feat was last achieved 44 years ago by Keke Rosberg:
The last driver to win the world championship in the year immediately following a win-less season was Jenson Button in 2009.

Earliest win
Antonelli has clinched the title with four rounds remaining. That assumes the final four rounds go ahead as planned: doubt remains over whether the races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi will happen.
| Rounds remaining | Driver | Year |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | Michael Schumacher | 2002 |
| 6* | Max Verstappen | 2023 |
| 5 | Nigel Mansell | 1992 |
| 4 | Michael Schumacher | 2001 |
| 4 | Michael Schumacher | 2004 |
| 4 | Sebastian Vettel | 2011 |
| 4 | Max Verstappen | 2022 |
| 4 | Andrea Kimi Antonelli | 2026 |
*Verstappen won the 2023 world championship in the sprint race for the Qatar Grand Prix, therefore part of the remaining six grand prix weekends had been completed

Champions by nationality
Antonelli’s win means Italy is now the joint-fifth most successful country in terms of world championships titles. Italian drivers have won the championship four times. The previous three all occured in the first four years of the world championship.

Antonelli is the first driver to win the world championship in car number 12 since one of the sport’s all-time greats: Ayrton Senna, who had the number 12 on his car when he won his first world championship with McLaren in 1988.
