Spotlight: Who won F1 and F2 in the same year? Colapinto knows his history | Brief

Sebastian Vettel was renowned for his knowledge of Formula 1 history, but does any driver on the grid today measure up to that standard?

Alpine driver Franco Colapinto showed he know his stuff in yesterday’s press conference when the discussion turned to Formula 2 points-leader Rafael Camara making his grand prix debut this weekend.

Camara gave no insight into whether he’ll return to F2 after making his debut for Haas this weekend. Colapinto wondered if he might do both.

“It would be really fun to do F2 and F1 at the same time,” the Alpine driver suggested. “You can do the same weekend, both? Do F2 quali, you jump in F1.”

“Jim Clark won both in the same year. But it’s the same, a little bit?”

Clark did indeed clinch F1 and F2 championships in the same year, 1965. In fact, he and F1 rival Graham Hill finished first and second in both series.

But there’s no chance of Camara being able to race for both Haas and Invicta. F2’s regulations state: “Any driver nominated to race by a competitor participating in the FIA Formula One World Championship will not be permitted to participate in the FIA Formula 2 Championship in the same competition.”
