Spotlight: Verstappen puzzled by engine braking: ‘It just decides by itself what to do’ | Formula 1

Max Verstappen said he couldn’t explain the engine braking problems he reported on his radio during the latter stages of the Mexican Grand Prix.

“It happens randomly,” said Verstappen, who won the race despite. “The engine just decides by itself what to do, to be honest. So, I don’t know.

“Maybe I need to have a conversation with the engine before going into the race. Maybe it has to behave better.”

He suspected the problem was linked to the demanding conditions at the track. “We don’t know, sometimes it just happens. It’s not very consistent.

“I think, honestly, everything is running so hot here, and also for the turbocharger and everything, it’s tough to make everything spot on.”
