Ospreys seal first win of season in derby thriller

Ospreys players congratulate number eight Morgan Morris

Tries: Dee 2, penalty try, Tuitavuki Cons: de Beer 3 Pen: O'Brien

Tries: Moriarty, Giles, Parry 2, Morris 2 Cons: Edwards 4

Ospreys secured a first win of the season as they edged Dragons in a 10-try United Rugby Championship (URC) Welsh derby at Rodney Parade.

In a game where the lead changed hands on eight occasions, hooker Sam Parry and number eight Morgan Morris scored two tries each, with flanker Ross Moriarty and Keelan Giles also crossing.

Dragons suffered their first defeat of the season despite another brace from hooker Elliot Dee, a penalty try and score from wing Anzelo Tuitavuki. A late Angus O'Brien penalty ensured the home side finished with two match points.

It proved an attritional affair with Dragons losing three injured props which meant passive scrums in the final quarter in a match that produced seven tries from attacking driving line-outs.

The Ospreys did not escape casualties with former Australia wing Marika Koroibete only lasting 30 minutes on his debut and Wales scrum-half Kieran Hardy forced off with a leg injury.

Ospreys overcome more off-field issues

Ospreys wing Keelan Giles scores a try against Dragons

Twelve months ago, Ospreys had arrived in Newport a day after the WRU had announced confirmed cutting the number of regions from four to three.

The announcement gave Dragons a stay of execution but left Ospreys with their head on the chopping block with only one region set to continue in west Wales.

Supporters from both teams marched together through Newport in protest against the WRU before the game ended in a 19-19 draw.

A year on, there was more off-the-field activity a few hours before the fixture with the WRU revealing details of how they had come to their geographical decision of saving Dragons in the east and Cardiff in the capital and pitting Ospreys against Scarlets for a battle for the west Wales licence.

Ospreys have again tried to concentrate on matters on the pitch, however difficult life is made for them.

Head coach Mark Jones had rotated his side by giving starts to 27 players in defeats against Sharks and Lions in South Africa.

Dragons were one of six unbeaten sides going into round three of league games after a draw with Benetton and victory against Scarlets.

Head coach Filo Tiatia made three changes with starts for centre Fetuli Paea, scrum-half Che Hope and open-side flanker Harry Beddall.

Back-rower Ryan Woodman was ruled out with a bicep injury, while Thomas Young was a late withdrawal from the replacements bench.

The hosts started strongly as they opened the scoring with a fourth try of the season for Dee, as he followed up his two driving line-out scores against Scarlets with another similar effort.

Ospreys responded with their own rolling maul score as former Dragons flanker Moriarty was driven over.

Ospreys full-back Tom Rogers looked dangerous in the opening exchanges and produced an important tackle on Dragons number eight Harrison Keddie.

The visitors received a blow when Hardy was carried off with a leg injury, while Dragons prop Rob Hunt, who suffered a serious hamstring injury in the same fixture a year ago, also left the field after collapsing awkwardly in a scrum with what appeared to be a shoulder problem. He was replaced by Chris Coleman.

It was the second home front-rower to leave the field after Rhodri Jones had already come on for Rodrigo Martinez.

The home side butchered a try-scoring chance when the inside pass from wing Tuitavuki failed to find Hope.

Koroibete was replaced by Wallabies centre Lalaki Foketi who made an immediate impression.

After his fellow Australian Liam Wright had stolen possession, Foketi broke through and his deft chip was collected and expertly finished by Giles.

Dragons took the lead into the interval after Ospreys conceded a penalty with Moriarty also shown a yellow card.

Ospreys secure win with second-half power show

Ospreys overcame starting the second half with 14 players as Parry was driven over from another attacking line-out.

Dragons came roaring back with Dee crossing for his second as Tinus de Beer restored the lead with the conversion.

Ospreys were restored to 15 men and Parry popped up for his second score and the visitors bonus-point try which fly-half Dan Edwards converted.

Home co-captain and full-back O'Brien came off the replacements bench for his first appearance of the season and made an almost immediate impact.

His break saw him link up with Hope who provided the scoring pass to Tuitavuki with de Beer restoring the lead.

Dragons lost a third prop to injury with Coleman forced off, resulting in the final 17 minutes being played with passive scrums.

Co-captains Carter and O'Brien helped keep Dragons on top. Lock Carter produced a vital interception and galloping run before O'Brien's brilliant 50/22 pinned back their opponents.

Ospreys demonstrated their resilience with Morgan Morse gaining a vital turnover penalty on his own line before Morris burrowed over the Dragons line up the other end of the field after the home side had crucially lost possession.

Morris then put the match beyond doubt with his second try in quick succession before the late O'Brien kick completed the scoring.
