On this day in 1991 Nigel Mansell won the Spanish Grand Prix, held at the Circuit de Catalunya for the first time, after memorably going wheel-to-wheel with Ayrton Senna on a damp track.

Senna finished fifth after a spin, which kept Mansell’s fading title hopes alive. The pair headed into the final two rounds separated by 16 points, with 10 available for a win.

Behind Mansell, Alain Prost finished second and stood on the podium for the final time as a Ferrari driver. Their team mates followed them him, Riccardo Patrese ahead of Jean Alesi.

Michael Schumacher scored the final point in sixth place, sustaining his run of points finishes in all of his first three starts for Benetton, following his defection from Jordan.
