On this day 25 years ago Mika Hakkinen scored his final Formula 1 win, at Indianapolis, despite a grid penalty for a pre-race pit lane infringement.

Hakkinen was originally due to start from the front row alongside pole-winner Michael Schumacher. However the stewards deleted his fastest qualifying time after he drove through a red light at the pit lane exit during the pre-race warm-up.

There was more controversy after the race when Jarno Trulli was disqualified from fourth place when his Jordan’s skid blocks were found not to conform with the technical regulations. Jordan successfully petitioned the International Court of Appeal to quash the decision one month later after pointing out only two of the three required stewards had been present when the decision to exclude Trulli was taken.

The penultimate race of 2001 also saw beloved British F1 television commentator Murray Walker make his final regular appearance in the commentary box.
