Lando Norris has revealed he apologised to Franco Colapinto for the comments he made about him following the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
The reigning world champion slated the Alpine driver for triggering a three-car collision which eliminated the pair and Colapinto’s team mate Pierre Gasly.Following the crash Norris said he “just got taken out” and “some drivers […] shouldn’t be in Formula 1 to be honest.” He also called for Colapinto to face a race ban for triggering the collision.
However in a social media post two days later Norris said he has cleared the air with Colapinto.
“[A] tough weekend overall in Baku and of course a disappointing and early end to the race,” he said.
“After the race, I sent Franco a message apologising for the comments I made that I simply should not have said. I know better and emotions were running high but that is not an excuse, it was wrong of me. I’ve made mistakes of my own over the years and I know this is very much a part of racing and fighting on the limit.
“Me and Franco came to a good understanding, are still good friends and are both excited to get back racing this weekend.”
Yesterday Alpine issued a statement criticising abusive social media comments aimed at multiple people following the crash.
