Nat Sciver-Brunt urged to follow Harry Brook's example amid WPL-England dilemma

England Women captain, Nat Sciver-Brunt, faces a dilemma over missing their T20I series in Sri Lanka to play in the final week of the WPL.

England Women will play a T20I and ODI series in Sri Lanka ahead of the Champions Trophy in February next year. The T20I leg of the series clashes with the final stages of the WPL, with the ECB having indicated that they will allow the players complete the competition.

Sciver-Brunt was retained by Mumbai Indians for the upcoming season, and is one of the WPL's highest-earning players, taking home around £320,000 for playing in the competition. She is one of only two England players who were retained by their WPL sides for the 2027 edition, with Sophie Ecclestone set to play for UP Warriorz. The auction player list announced this week featured only two English players in Sophia Dunkley and Kira Chathli.

If Sciver-Brunt does miss England's T20I series in Sri Lanka, she will have captained England in just four of the 14 T20Is the side will have played in the preceding 12 month period. She missed their T20I series' against New Zealand and India this summer with a calf injury, with the same injury meaning she played only four of England's matches in the T20 World Cup.

Speaking on , Lauren Winfield-Hill urged Sciver-Brunt to play the T20I series in Sri Lanka. "She absolutely should be there in my opinion if she wants to continue captaining England," said Winfield-Hill. "It's not a good look.

"You can't talk about playing for England means the world for you unless you back that up with your actions. It'll be interesting how it all plays out, and money always talks. The amount of money that she's on vs what she would be earning for England would be significant. But I just think if you want to continue as England captain you should be playing for England."

The T20I series between England and Sri Lanka was originally meant to be played after the WPL had finished. However, with the Champions Trophy having been moved to the February window, the ECB and SLC have agreed to moved the series forward before the start of the tournament.

Winfield-Hill also drew parallel to Harry Brook's decision to withdraw from the IPL to prioritise his comitments to England. He pulled out of the 2025 edition of the tournament, and subsequently was banned from entering the auction for two years.

"I hate to draw parallels to the men's game, but you've got to have huge respect for Harry Brook and the decision that he made on the IPL," said Winfield-Hill. "And that was before he was England captain. 'That is a shit load of money, but I care about playing for England.'"

The WPL auction will take place on October 28 in Kochi. England will begin their T20I series against Sri Lanka on February 1.
