Munster to mark 10-year anniversary of Foley's death

Anthony Foley

Munster will host a special ceremony before next week's Investec Champions Cup game against Racing 92 in Cork to mark the 10-year anniversary of Anthony Foley's death.

The occasion will hold extra significance as Foley's sudden passing on 16 October 2016 occurred on the eve of a Champions Cup match against the same opposition in France when he was head coach of the Irish province.

Before kick-off at Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Saturday, 17 October, Jean Wallace and members of Shannon RFC - Foley's former club - will perform 'There Is An Isle' in tribute.

In addition, there will be a photo display in the 'Red Shed' area of Marina Park, outside the stadium, illustrating Foley's career with Munster and Ireland which saw him captain both sides.

Munster's players are set to wear special commemorative jackets emblazoned with the Munster crest and number eight - Foley's position - while both team captains will swap jerseys featuring the number eight prior to kick-off.

Munster fans are also set to lead a round of applause in the eighth minute in honour of Foley who was fondly known as 'Axel'.

At half-time, the kids' matches will feature boys' and girls' teams from Ballina-Killaloe RFC - Foley's hometown - and Shannon RFC.
