Scotland's number one golfer, Robert MacIntyre, has called for Carnoustie and Muirfield to become regular venues again for the Open Championship.

Carnoustie last hosted the tournament in 2018, when Italy's Francesco Molinari lifted the Claret Jug, while Muirfield's most recent staging was in 2013.

Next year's Open will be held at St Andrews and MacIntyre says more regular visits to Scotland would be a major boost for the game in the country.

"That would be brilliant," he said. "I feel like there's not enough Open Championships in Scotland anymore.

"Carnoustie, Muirfield - I'd love to see them all in it, proper championship test."

MacIntyre is back at St Andrews this week to defend the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship title he won last year, becoming the first Scot in 20 years to lift the trophy.

The 30-year-old also won the Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club in 2024 and says the memories of winning on home soil will stay with him.

"Special," he said. "Obviously I've not had the best relationship with the Old Course, but to finally get across the line here, it was nice, and to do it back on home soil is always extra special.

"It's good to be back and going out this afternoon and seeing the new changes in the Old Course and see what's what and make a plan.

"It's always good just to get back on home soil, get people that actually care about you, people that want to come and see you, cheer good shots, won't cheer bad shots."

MacIntyre is currently outside the qualifying places for the end-of-season events in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

With qualification also under way for next year's Ryder Cup at Adare Manor in Ireland, the Scot knows he must also improve his performances if he is to earn a place in Luke Donald's team for the 2027 event.

MacIntyre has played in the last two Ryder Cups and is determined to be involved again.

"I want to be in every Ryder Cup team, but there's so much more that goes into it than just wanting to be in a team or trying to achieve that sort of thing," he added.

"I had a meeting this morning with my stats guy, Mark, and Mike, my caddy, and there's some areas that I really need to improve on.

"I've known that for the last year. We've not managed to improve it. I've put things in place to try to improve that and it's not worked.

"So let's try something new and that's what I'm doing."
