Leclerc fastest again, Verstappen and Lawson face investigation over collision | Formula 1

Charles Leclerc topped both practice sessions on Friday at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Ferrari have now led the last five practice sessions in a row, including all three at the Circuit of the Americas last weekend.

The day did not go entirely smoothly for the Maranello team, however. Lewis Hamilton came to a stop due to a power unit problem having completed just 13 laps. He was therefore unable to do a qualifying simulation run and ended the session outside the top 10.

Lando Norris set the second-fastest time, a tenth of a second slower than Leclerc. George Russell, back in his Mercedes after Frederik Vesti drove it in first practice, took third ahead of his team mate.

The Red Bull pair were next, led by Max Verstappen, though he was carrying some damage following an earlier collision with one of the team’s junior cars. Verstappen attempted to pass Liam Lawson on the inside of turn 12, but the Racing Bulls driver was unwilling to surrender the position.

Lawson took the racing line at the exit of the sharp turn 13, obliging Verstappen to use the run-off area. Verstappen rejoined the track and hit Lawson, damaging both cars. The collision scattered debris over the track and the session had to be red-flagged while it was cleared up. The stewards will investigate the incident.

Isack Hadjar slotted in sixth behind his team mate. All four Red Bull-Ford-powered cars appeared in the top 10, Lawson taking ninth, two places behind his team mate, with Pierre Gasly’s Alpine in between them. Oscar Piastri in the second McLaren was 10th.

Fernando Alonso could not repeat his first practice high, falling to 12th place. The Haas pair were next, Esteban Ocon unhappy at being required to finish his run on the medium tyre compound. He also suffered a loss of power steering when he joined the track, while Oliver Bearman briefly stopped with a software problem when he first joined the track, though he was able to restart.

Gabriel Bortoleto missed a significant part of the session due to a technical problem on his Audi. He was able to join the track in time to run at the end of the session.
