Jersey playing at highest level ever - Tribe

Zak Tribe

Jersey all-rounder Zak Tribe feels the island side is playing its best-ever cricket.

The islanders won Cricket World Cup Challenge League A last week, topping their group by five points from second-placed Kuwait.

It meant Jersey progressed to the Cricket World Cup Qualifier play-off for the second successive time.

They will travel to Nepal next month to play matches at one-day international status in an eight-team tournament, with the top four progressing to the final round of qualifying for the 2027 Cricket World Cup.

"I think we're playing at a higher level than we've really ever played," Tribe told BBC Radio Jersey.

"We played in Namibia in 2023 at this qualifier play-off level, so we've got to this level that we're going to in December before.

"We've never progressed from that, but I think the side are consistently showing that we belong there being able to get there back-to-back years.

"The side is obviously another three years older than they were back in 2023, so they are improving."

Tribe, 25, was named best batter at the final round of Challenge League A matches while team-mate Josh Lawrenson was named best player.

Tribe hit his highest-ever international score of 150 in Jersey's win over Papua New Guinea while he also made 65 against hosts Kenya and 53 against Qatar, as well as taking nine wickets over the five matches.

As well as Challenge League A rivals Kuwait and hosts Nepal, Jersey will face Italy, Canada, Uganda, Namibia and the United Arab Emirates next month.

"I'd like to think that we could progress, but it is going to be a challenge," Tribe added.

"The sides coming up - Italy, Uganda - they're both strong. Kuwait obviously beat us in this last round so we know that we've got to be on it against them too.

"Then the four sides that we're joining in that group, Namibia, Nepal, Canada and UAE, they're sides that have been playing ODI cricket all year round for the last three years and years prior to that as well.

"So they are going to be very strong sides and we know that we're going to have to play well when we come up against them.

"But with the experience we've had of playing Nepal and UAE earlier on in the year, we're able to take things from those games to learn how we can better play these games with matchups and what it's like to play at that level as well, the intensity of it.

"I think we can do well, we can definitely turn over a few of those sides and ultimately we'll be trying to finish in that top half of the table."

Tribe also had the chance to play alongside his younger brother Asa.

Glamorgan and England Lions batter Asa featured in Jersey's first three matches, with the brothers putting on a 133-run partnership in the win over Kenya.

Zak says having the chance to play with his brother at international level again has helped him and his team-mates as they benefit from Asa's experience of the county game in England and franchise cricket.

"He's got a different perspective of the game, which the guys in the side haven't managed to understand yet, just from playing that higher level," Zak said.

"He views the game in a slightly different way and a slightly more advanced way, which is quite nice, and you can pick his brains out there batting in the middle.

"You bounce ideas off each other and learn to build an innings in a way which is actually beneficial for the team and is going to allow you to get the team in a good position at the end of the innings."

Asa Tribe, who averages more than 40 in first-class cricket and almost 58 in List A cricket, has been tipped for full England honours in the future

"I know my game is slightly behind where Asa's is at the minute," he added.

"Like everyone I'm looking to progress through the levels, do well, keep doing well for Jersey, hopefully do well in any county opportunities I may get or in franchise cricket.

"Where cricket is at the minute there are plenty of options to do that, there's plenty of franchise leagues popping up around the world and hopefully trying to get into those.

"If I get into any of those that's going to be good for my game as well."
