There are two significant changes to the usual race weekend format for this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
This is the latest date the race at the Baku City Circuit has ever been held. Formula One Management confirmed it moved the date forward from the usual Sunday slot to Saturday following a request from the government and race promoters “to accommodate a national day”.Azerbaijan’s dictatorial president Ilham Aliyev designated September 27th as a ‘Remembrance Day’ in 2020 to mark the beginning of that year’s war in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Azerbaijan expelled all ethnic Armenians from the territory in 2023. Aliyev’s ethnic cleansing drove around 100,000 people from their homes.
FOM has agreed all its track sessions will take place a day earlier than usual this weekend. That includes the trio of Formula 2 support races.
The series has added an extra feature race due to the cancellation of its rounds in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia earlier this year due to the Iran war. As it will not accompany F1 to Sepang next week for the ‘Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia’, the F2 drivers have a two-month break until their next event in Qatar, though it remains unclear whether that round or the finale in Abu Dhabi will take place.
