Scotland v New Zealand preview
It’s a remarkable statistic that, in over a century of facing the All Blacks, Scotland have never come out on top. It’s one of the longest running ducks in rugby, but could this be the year they finally pick up a win.
Both these sides had strong Nations Championship campaigns in July. Scotland beat Argentina and Fiji, and were impressive in defeat to the Springboks. The All Blacks, meanwhile, went three from three against France, Italy and Ireland.
Over the last few years, Gregor Townsend’s side have proved they’re capable of beating anyone – their 50-40 victory over France in this year’s Six Nations was one for the ages. The Scots have one of the most feared backlines in world rugby, with the mercurial Finn Russell calling the shots, and try scorers all over the park. The pack has also proved it can hold its own against most.
The All Blacks come into the game off the back of an extremely busy season, with July’s Nations Championship fixtures followed by the Greatest Rivalry tour of South Africa, and two Bledisloe Cup matches against Australia. New boss Dave Rennie has got his men playing some scintillating rugby, so – provided fatigue doesn’t come into play – they’ll undoubtedly be the favourites.
For the impressive Scots, meanwhile, it’s a case of if not now, when?
