Andrea Kimi Antonelli is poised to clinch the world championship at the next round.
The championship leader finished third in the Singapore Grand Prix, extending his lead at the top of the standings to 102 points over team mate George Russell. With six rounds remaining, none of which include sprint races, there are still 150 points up for grabs. That will fall to 125 points after the next race, the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas.
Therefore if Antonelli leaves Austin with 125 points in hand over his rivals, he will win the world championship with five rounds to spare.
The only way he can do that is if he wins the race at the Circuit of the Americas. Antonelli will also need Russell to finish no higher than tenth and Lewis Hamilton to finish outside the top five.
Three other drivers remain mathematically in contention for the championship: Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris. However none of them can win the title if Antonelli scores another grand prix victory.
The championship situation could change if F1 is unable to hold any of the remaining races. The war in Iran has cast doubt over whether the two final rounds in the Middle East venues Qatar and Abu Dhabi will go ahead. F1 has indicated it could replace one race with another at Imola.
