Four places, 14 contenders: The battle to reach the 2027 ODI World Cup

The ICC men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier will confirm the remaining four places in the 2027 ODI World Cup. Here we explain the path for teams to secure those four spots.

The 2027 ODI World Cup, to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, is less than a year away, and the race for the remaining four spots is reaching its final stages. The qualifier is scheduled to be played from February 26, where the final four spots will be confirmed, but how does the structure work?

As of now, 10 Full Member sides have qualified for the marquee event on the basis of their rankings and host status. The eight highest-ranked teams on September 30, plus hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, secured automatic qualification for the World Cup. The two lowest-ranked FM sides - West Indies and Ireland - will be competing in the ODI World Cup Qualifier.

Which teams have qualified for the 2027 ODI World Cup Qualifier?

Apart from West Indies and Ireland, the qualifier will include eight other teams. The top-four teams from the Cricket World Cup League 2 qualify directly. On Wednesday, Oman secured the fourth spot on the League 2 table to book their ticket for the qualifier alongside the USA, Scotland and the Netherlands.

All's not lost for the bottom four teams in CWC League 2. Namibia, Nepal, the UAE, and Canada now head to the World Cup Qualifier Play-Off, where they are joined by Italy, Jersey, Kuwait, and Uganda - the top two teams from CWC Challenge League A & B.

The qualifier play-off is scheduled to begin on December 4 in Nepal, with all eight teams facing the others once each in a round-robin format. The top-four teams in the table after the round will advance to the qualifier, where 10 teams will fight it out for four World Cup spots.

Teams to compete in the World Cup Qualifier Play-Off:

The top-placed team at the qualifier will advance straight to the World Cup group stage, joining Group 1, which features India, Australia, Pakistan Afghanistan and Zimbabwe. The next three teams from the qualifier will have to compete in round one of the tournament, named the Super Series, with the winner moving to Group 2, which has New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, England and Bangladesh.

It's a bit of a head-spinning process, and several players from non-FM teams, including Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus, have already voiced their frustration over the amount of rounds they have to go through to reach the pinnacle of the sport that is the ODI World Cup.
