Formula 1’s move to shorter grands prix in 2027 will not be permanent | Formula 1

Formula 1 will reinstate full grand prix distances in 2028 after shortening the races this year, the FIA has confirmed.

The championship announced last month it will cut 15 kilometres from the standard grand prix distance next year as a result of the new fuel flow limits which will come into force. Shortening the grand prix distances will reduce the number of components teams need to redesign next year.

The shortened distance of 290 kilometres will apply for all grands prix except Monaco, which has run to a shorter distance of 260km for many years and will continue to.

However the first edition of the 2027 Formula 1 Sporting Regulations published by the FIA notes the previous distance will apply again from 2028. “The distance of the race [i.e. grand prix], from the start signal referred to in Article B5.7.2 to the end-of-session signal referred to in Article B5.16.1, shall be equal to the least number of complete laps which exceed a distance of 305km,” it states.
