The FIA is using Formula 1’s base at Biggin Hill in the UK as the site of its new Race Operations Centre.
Biggin Hill is the home of F1’s broadcasting operations, where raw footage from the hundreds of camera operators which cover every session are combined into the video feeds seen by millions of viewers worldwide. The governing body of motorsport announced the opening of the new facility which will allow its officials to manage events around the world without being present in person.
A key part of the facility’s functions will involve providing support to race control and stewards on decisions during sessions. It will assist in detecting when drivers have jumped the start or lined up incorrectly on the grid, exceeded track limits or committed offences in the pit lane.
The ROC will also use new artificial intelligence systems to automate processes and detect incidents.
FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem and Formula 1 president and CEO Stefano Domenicali were among those who attended the formal inauguration of the new facility.
“As the championship grows globally, it is vital that we continue to invest in the people, technology and infrastructure that underpin world-class race operations,” said Ben Sulayen. “This state-of-the-art facility will strengthen our ability to support accurate, consistent and efficient decision-making, ensuring that our sport continues to operate at the highest possible standards.”
