Did the social media backlash over Lando Norris’s comments on Franco Colapinto show he was wrong to speak out in the first place?
Reader @GongTong says the unacceptable reaction online doesn’t mean Norris was in the wrong:We want drivers that do speak before they think. The sport in recent years has become very sterile with how meticulously the drivers are trained in PR. Mostly they give completely empty statements like “we will talk back at base” or “I’ll need to watch the replay”.
But the point is, he made a comment in the heat of the moment. Which he later rolled back on. Which he’s entitled to do.
What nobody is entitled to do is make death threats. It’s disgraceful, regardless of what a driver has said. It’s also illegal.
