With Andrea Kimi Antonelli poised to win the world championship this weekend, has Formula 1’s ruined season diminished his inevitable triumph? Rick disagrees:
I agree with the disappointing season but I don’t think it takes away from soon to be Antonelli’s championship season. In my almost 50 years of watching F1 there have been many unusual situations and this season will just be added to that list.
I find the biggest problem is that the current ownership knows that they can bring in more casual watchers by reducing true racing and making the spectacle more “entertaining” which in turn means more profit. Will that change? I doubt it because to the owners, it’s about the show and how much revenue it generates, not about racing.
I’ve lived in six countries, most of my life in the USA, and I can say with confidence that greed is the driving force in the country. I’m absolutely not against striving for something, working hard and making huge amounts of money. The problem is when you sacrifice the quality of your life for the desire to make more. In my opinion, that attitude is what drives F1 now and until it changes, I doubt we will see true racing.
