Arsenal and Manchester City in action, FA Cup first round news and more – matchday live

A stat for today's early Premier League game. That's a surprisingly impressive record Tottenham have when travelling to West Yorkshire. No southern softies struggling in front of a baying Elland Road crowd angle here.

  • Spurs have won four of their last five Premier League matches against Leeds at Elland Road (L1), including each of the last three in a row. Two of those were the final game in charge for Leeds managers – Marcelo Bielsa in February 2022 and Sam Allardyce in May 2023.

The starting XIs for today's game at Elland Road are here!

Trafford, Justin, Elvedi, Muharemovic, Bogle, Ampadu, Longstaff, Gudmundsson, Tanaka, Nmecha, Calvert-Lewin.
Zetterer, Bard, Bijol, Rodon, Gruev, James, Wilson, Aaronson, Okafor.

Kinsky, Porro, Van Hecke, Van de Ven, Robertson, Tonali, Gray, Kudus, Fernandes, Tel, Marmoush.
Gunter, Davies, Senesi, Gallagher, Bentancur, Kulusevski, Maddison, Williams-Barnett, Solanke.

A certain Barry Glendenning has been in touch. I thought this might happen.

Well David, I note with interest that there is a very conspicuous absentee from your all-time Barry charts.

Okay, an update…

Premier League goals by Barrys (Opta):

  1. Barry Glendenning, Barry off East Enders, Barry Manilow, Barry White, Barry Gibb, Barry Chuckle, Barry Humphries, Barry Cryer, Barry Norman, Barry Davies, Barry Sheene, Barry McGuigan, Barry John, Barry Hearn, Barry Island – 0.

Team news for Leeds v Spurs is coming up very shortly. Our blog for that one is right here.

It's the question we were all asking last night: where does Thierno sit in the all-time Barry charts. The Frenchman now has 10 goals this season (six in the Premier League), two more than he netted in the entirety of his maiden campaign.

Everton can claim This City Is Ours after going above Liverpool last night. But where do affinities lie when it comes to the main characters in the Bafta-nominted BBC gangland drama? Ideally, bitter rivals Michael and Jamie would be split: one Liverpool, one Everton. But, nah, both actors – James Nelson-Joyce (Michael) and Jack McMullen (Jamie) – are Reds fans, passionate ones at that.

The excellent Nelson-Joyce was interviewed by the Guardian's Michael Hogan last year. He described how he celebrated after the Reds secured the title with the 5-1 victory over Tottenham.

I ended up in the Anfield boardroom after the match, then partied with the team. The DJ clocked that I was there, played Andy Williams' House of Bamboo and it all went right off. Harvey Elliott and a few other players dragged me on to the dancefloor and made me do it with them. They all love the show, which is a huge compliment.

You'll notice in the WSL table below that Charlton have still to pick up a point after eight games. Here's Tom Garry on how Karen Hills' team are struggling to compete against clubs with chunkier wallets.

The top two are in action in the WSL today. Both have lunchtime kick-offs. Chelsea and Manchester City each have 22 points from their eight games (seven wins and a draw) and both will be expected to rack up another win today. That will set things up perfectly for next weekend when the two meet on Saturday, Chelsea having home advantage.

This week's edition of 'The talk' features a variety of managerial mutterings. Declan Rice's workload and recent criticisms of goalkeepers Gianluigi Donnarumma and Alisson are discussed.

No, you didn't imagine this story. Remarkable stuff. Maybe Dedic is the new Gazza. Perhaps he'll hide a trout in Joelinton's car or bring an ostrich to training.

Newcastle's Amar Dedic is unlikely to face a club sanction after being spotted holding a bow and arrow in the Northumberland countryside and sparking a major police pursuit involving an armed response unit.

Here's Barney Ronay's latest column. An interesting opening line to set us on our journey through Gianni Infantino, Donald Trump and the US midterms.

Oh baby, clamp me in your repulsive mouthparts.

A more heartwarming tale now. It's the story of Jobe Bellingham being called up by England. Three Lions boss, Thomas Tuchel, says it will be "beautiful" for Jude to have his younger brother in camp.

Interesting article here from Paul MacInnes on "schooligans". TikTok and Snapchat have been approached for comment on the rise of teenage ultras.

Hednesford chief executive, Marvin Robinson:

"I'm not really sure I understand why it seems to be a trend. It's a wider social issue but what is it and what will it become? Is it a social media thing? Is it about notoriety or becoming known for something? The adult response online has been almost to normalise it. I don't agree with that."

An email. Krishnamoorthy v has been pondering today's games.

Hello David. Would Leeds be able to puncture the nascent baloon of Tottenham optimism (if ever there was a candidate for a perfect oxymoron, this would ace it) and can we expect City to lose its way in the forest?

A couple of Opta stats could sway your thinking, Krish.

  • Leeds v Spurs: Leeds have picked up just five points in their last 13 Premier League matches against Tottenham.

  • Nottingham Forest v Man City: Having become the 10th team in English top-flight history to win each of their first seven games in a campaign, Man City have now lost their last two. Only Sheffield Wednesday in 1904-05 have won their first seven and then lost their next three.

Back to the Premier League and plenty to go at here with nine things still to unfold. Includes an exciting infographic showing that Leeds have scored the joint-fewest goals across the last five top-flight games. Slightly surprising.

A Euro round-up from last night. Not much impact on tables but the completists will enjoy logging what happened.

Hamburg 3-1 Gladbach. Hamburg scored twice in 11 minutes after the break (59 and 70). The win lifts them to eighth on 12 points. Gladbach stay bottom with four points and one win from nine games. They also had a player sent off for a second yellow late on.

Venezia 2-1 Udinese. This was a meeting of Serie A's bottom two, and all three goals came in an 11-minute spell.

Sevilla 0-0 Alaves. A dull game with five shots on target in total, three for Sevilla and two for Alavés. Sevilla stay sixth on 18 points and Alavés are ninth on 13.

Toulouse 3-1 Strasbourg. Toulouse are now 10th on 13 points. Strasbourg had won 5-1 against Auxerre last week but remain 13th on 10.

As for today's FA Cup first-round action, there are 33 ties and, get this, 31 of them kick off at 3pm. Proper football man, John Brewin, took a proper look at some of the most intriguing ties in Friday's Football Daily.

There were two games in the FA Cup first round last night. Hopes of an Oxbridge double were ended as Leicester avoided a shock at sixth-tier Oxford City while Bristol Rovers beat Cambridge.

Here's Leicester boss Russell Martin:

I'm annoyed we conceded two goals, it's my job to be annoyed about that. I thought we played some really good football. After we scored we took our foot off the gas a little bit. I have to give credit to Oxford City. They've got a good thing going here. They had a spell and they scored from it. I really enjoyed the second-half performance. It took a big group effort tonight. We scored four goals, probably could have scored a couple more, and we're through which is the most important thing."

Warren O'Hora clears the ball from a corner

Here are today's Premier League matches (all times GMT). Only four but lots of angles. If Spurs win by a two-goal margin at Leeds, they'd go sixth. Victory for Arsenal would put them six clear at the top – for a few hours at least.

12.30pm: Leeds v Tottenham
3pm: Arsenal v Hull
3pm: Fulham v Newcastle
5.30pm: Nottingham Forest v Man City

From Coventry's point of view, last night was one of frustration and annoyance as big decisions went against them. Former Toffees boss Frank Lampard felt his side should have had two penalties and one of Everton's goals should have been ruled out.

James Tarkowski appeared to pull the hair of Caleb Yirenkyi as the pair challenged for a cross in the first half but no penalty was awarded. The same went for Vitalii Mkykolenko's tackle on Taiwo Awoniyi, which VAR ruled was marginally outside the box, while the second of Thierno Barry's two goals was checked for handball but was allowed to stand. Here's what Lampard had to say:

For sure, I have looked at them because emotions in the moment, sometimes you can't be clear, but Tarky pulls on Caleb's hair. I think that's a hard area to be in. What is a hair pull and what is not? He's decided it is but it's not enough.

"Taiwo, for me, on the line of the box is a penalty. You have to give the foul in real time anyway but the ref let it go. I thought it was a penalty by the time Myko's knee is in the back of Taiwo's knee. The Barry (second) one is handball, I've heard it didn't hit his hand but he's flicked it in with the final touch. VAR is there for that. Nothing went for us tonight.

"Well played Everton, they won the game and we knew it would be a tough match, but if three decisions are that big – I can't sit here and say I know everything and they should give all three of them, but if one or two go our way they would clearly change the game."

Everton's Thierno Barry celebrates scoring

David Moyes has been, let's say, rather honest in previous assessments of Thierno Barry. But the Everton manager was positively gushing in his praise after the striker's double against Coventry:

Fabulous! Haaland's worried about him catching him now! I don't see many young centre-forwards scoring loads of goals in the Premier League.

"He's settled down a bit more now. His language, his understanding and his communication is much better as well. Obviously he's working hard to get in those positions to score. I'm really pleased for him."

Here we are Everton fans – the Premier League table. Wind back to the summer when Liverpool had increased their £100m contingent to three and you were heading into the season with Thierno Barry as your only striker. Okay, the Reds could go leapfrog the Blues on Sunday but, for now, Everton are fifth and Barry is the Premier League's joint-second top scorer.

Good morning! The Premier League weekend is already in play after Everton came back from 1-0 down to beat Coventry 3-1 at the Hill Dickinson last night. Two goals from the in-form Thierno Barry turned the game and put the Toffees above Liverpool!

Leeds and Tottenham get today's Premier League action under way at 12.30pm GMT, followed by Arsenal hosting Hull to headline our 3pm clockwatch. Manchester City head south to Nottingham Forest in the 5.30pm game, plus there's a huge slate of FA Cup first-round action, the WSL's top two both kicking off at 12.45pm, Bayern and Dortmund in the Bundesliga at 2.30pm and much more!
