Fernando Alonso has ended speculation over his future by signing a new contract to race in Formula 1 again next year.

Formula 1’s most experienced driver of all time will remain at Aston Martin for a fifth season.

The 45-year-old said he is “very happy” with his decision. His future in the sport had been in doubt due to his strong criticism of Formula 1’s new technical regulations and Aston Martin’s failure to provide a competitive car this year.

“I took my time to make this decision,” said Alonso, “but racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level.

“I’m committed for the long term with this team and to helping us succeed. I truly believe in what we are building: we have strong leadership, incredible people, partners and facilities. I look forward to making more memories on the race track in front of the passionate fans. Their energy creates an atmosphere that inspires me and is what makes our sport special.”

Aston Martin also confirmed Alonso’s team mate Lance Stroll, son of team owner Lawrence Stroll, will drive for them again next year.
