Nathan McSweeney hundred rescues Australia A before India A collapse

McSweeney had got three starts in four innings in the two-match “Test” series against India A. He scored 0, 35, 34, and 36 – in other words, he could not convert any of them to a big score.

Now, in the first “ODI” at the Cricket Association Pondicherry Siachem Ground in Puducherry, he stepped out at 30-2, and soon saw Australia A slump to 87-5. He finally found support in captain Will Sutherland, who blasted his way to a 68-ball 77 with two fours and four sixes in a stand of 151.

McSweeney continued after Sutherland’s departure, and was ninth out for a 135-ball 123 that included 13 fours. Australia A were bowled out for 274 as Suyansh Shedge returned 4-40 and Yash Thakur 3-47.

Mahli Beardman’s (4-23) early strikes then reduced the hosts to 58-4. Rajat Patidar (53 in 51 balls, five fours, one six) resisted, but found little support as they were bowled out for 149 to go one-up. McSweeney’s off-breaks dismissed Nishant Sindhu (31) to break the fifth-wicket stand of 47, the biggest of the innings.

McSweeney had an impressive summer with Northamptonshire, where he scored 754 runs at 44.35 with four hundreds in the County Championship and 485 runs at 69.28 with six fifties in eight innings in the One-Day Cup.

However, his only matches for Australia remain the three home Tests against India in 2024/25, where he scored 72 runs at 14.40 and fell to Jasprit Bumrah four times in a row.
